The Lesser Redpoll is very closely related to the Common Redpoll, and many consider it only a subspecies of this. This species breeds in the Alps and other Central European mountain areas, in the British Isles and from the southern North Sea area to southern Sweden, in northern Europe mainly in coastal areas. There is now a significant breeding population along the Norwegian Skagerrak coast and in southwestern Norway, especially in the area from Lindesnes to Egersund.
