The Nutcracker is usually a stationary species throughout the year. In case of poor seeding of hazel or Swiss pine, birds can migrate away from their normal range. The traditional Norwegian subspecies is breeding in the Southeast and in the West. Both areas have good abundance of hazel.
At Lista lighthouse it is an irruptive bird which some years can be seen in large numbers, depending on the availability of food. The figures below show updated data from the bird station:
