Lesser white throath being ringed

The bird observatory opened again on July 15th, and in total 190 birds were ringed on the first day of autumn season. During the second day, 94 birds were caught in the mist nets. Willow warblers topped the ringing numbers with a total of 53 for the first day, and 15 on the second day. Chaffinches hold a good second place with a total of 44 individuals ringed on the first two days.

By M. Wold

The first two days of autumn season were blessed with sunny weather and very little wind. The good weather in addition to the fact that most of the young, local birds have yet to learn where the mist nets are located, had its impact on the ringing numbers. A total of 190 birds were ringed on the first day, distributed over 26 different species, and on the second day the ringing total was 94 birds. The ringing numbers on the same two dates last year was 46.

The species topping the ringing numbers on the first two days is willow warbler, with 53 on the first and 15 on the second day. Last year, on the same dates, chaffinches topped the ringing numbers, and willow warblers not until a week later around 24.-25. of July. Hence this year seems to have been a particular good year for the willow warblers, and that they have reproduced in good numbers.

The most common birds ringed on the first day of autumn season were:

Willow warbler 53
Chaffinch 29
House sparrow 18
White throath 15

Among the less common were:

Magpie 1
Rock pipit 1
Wryneck 1
Marsh warbler 1

Retraps from last year were: three house sparrows, one lesser redpoll, one willow warbler and one field fare.
