Training and volunteering at LIBO

Training and volunteer: The Observatory is one of the most important ringing stations in Norway. Our geographic situation combined with the variety of habitats makes it one of the best places in Norway for both breeding and migrating birds. Hundreds of thousands of birds migrate through Lista including sea birds, waders, raptors, and passerines. It is also possible to see American and Siberian vagrants every year, making the place very attractive for birdwatchers.

What do we need?
Preferably bird ringers with licence A,B,C or birdwatchers with special knowledge on sea-bird identification. Volunteers are required to have good bird ID skills, or be willing and enthusiastic to learn. Also an attention to detail for accurate data recording is essential.

What will you do?

Help the ringer in charge on:

- Daily standardized bird-ringing

- Hilltop/Sea counts of migration

- Observations in the study area

- House, garden and mist-netting maintenance

What do we offer?
The opportunity to contribute to a major initiative to run all the activities at Lista Bird Observatory. You will have the chance to be out in the field, see lots of birds and get experience with undertaking wildlife surveys. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow birdwatchers from differents countries.

Practical information:

Travel: Plane to Stavanger + bus/train to Lyngdal/Snartemo

Work: bird-ringing, point count migration monitoring, sea-watching migration counts. There may also be some office-based work.

Language(s): English / Norwegian

Accommodation: in a house which can also host other birdwatchers. There are beds, kitchen, bathroom and living room.

Cost: Travel and food are covered by volunteers. LIBO will provide free accommodation and a compensation of NOK 300-; per week in periods with high activity.
**Preference could be given to volunteers who can stay longer than 3 weeks.

How to Apply:
People interested in participating should send an e-mail and CV to LIBO at post@listafuglestasjon.no. Remember to put "volunteer" and "name" in the subject of the e-mail.
