Words had spread that a blue tit ringed in Norway was recaptured in Shetland on the 17th of October this year. Ringers at Lista Bird Observatory wondered if it was ringed here, which proved to be the case. The bird got ringed by Richard Cope on the 5th of October.

Eightyfive blue tits were ringed on this day. One of these flew in to a net at Revtangen Ornithological Station on the 12th of October. The biggest numbers of blue tits were ringed on 1st of October, a total of 428 individuals. Five of them flew to the island of Utsira (Ornithological Station) and one flew to Revtangen. Recoveries over time show that blue tits passing through Lista are in general continuing in a western direction. Some individuals are recovered in different areas, but they probably first go west after being ringed at Lista. One bird was recovered at Starene Field station in Hedmark County. The journey was done in 29 days and the bird might have crossed the mountains from west to east.
The total number of blue tits ringed this year is about the same as in 2010, and slightly less than in 2011. It is rare with high ringing numbers for a species three years in a row, and also in 2007 and 2008 there were many blue tits on the move.

Blue tits migrating off the shore at Lista usually head back for land again as the danger of flying across open seas are generally too big. Many of those trying probably end up as gull and fish food!
