Ringing numbers are now 45% below average! Common Whitethroat Total ringed Common Whitethroat is now 41% under average. A total of 715 birds were ringed during the first 7 weeks of the autumn campaign on the standardized monitoring (average is 1293 birds). This period has been hotter and much drier than normal. Since 1990, the months of July and August 2021, show some of the lowest numbers in terms of standardized ringing. The ringing numbers for this period are 45% below average. Totalt 715 fugler ble ringmerket i løpet de første 7 ukene i den standardiserte høstfangsten (1293 fugler i gjennomsnitt) i 2021. Denne perioden har i år vært varmere og mye tørrere enn normalt. De to månedene juli- og august 2021 har ringmerkingstall som for begge de respektive månedene er blant de aller laveste siden 1990 da den standardiserte ringmerking startet. Antall ringmerkede fugl for denne perioden er så langt i år 45% under gjennomsnittet. Regarding the weather, the average temperature for these 7 weeks has been 0.5 °C higher than normal. Total precipitation has been 37.2% down average. A total of 715 birds of 43 different species have been ringed in this period (6 species and 342 birds fewer than last year). The weak results can be a combination of several reasons. Long periods of good weather may have caused migratory birds not to stop in the area to rest or to do so to a lesser extent. In addition, it seems that the incidence of Willow Warblers in general has been much lower than average this autumn. This species is normally by far the most numerous species caught in the nets during this period, so the numbers quickly become low when the Willow Warblers are scarce. Another possible reason may also be moderate or poor breeding success as both May and June had long periods of colder weather than normal. However, there has been some good surprises! A Bluethroat was trapped in August 2020, in which month had not been caught at Lista since 2013. In addition, an Arctic Warbler was ringed on August 28, being the first record for Lista Bird Observatory and Farsund municipality. The three most abundant species ringed during this period have been Willow Warbler (221 ind.= -50%), Starling (106 ind.= 17%) and Common Whitethroat (31 ind.= -40%). The ringing numbers for most species are still lower than average, especially obvious in most of the warblers, thrushes, sparrows, wagtails, pipits, finches and buntings. Ringing numbers of the following species show now between 40% and 95% down average: Coal Tit, Willow Warbler, Blackcap, Garden Warbler, Common Whitethroat, Song Thrush, Whinchat, House Sparrow, Dunnock, Meadow Pipit, Tree Pipit, Common Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Linnet, Yellowhammer. Regarding the observations, a total of 152 species have been seen in this period which is 17 less species than the same period in 2020.
