Lista Birdfestival 2026
We invited Terje Lislevand to give this year’s presentation. He told the many people who attended about spring migration and other new developments in migratory bird research. Saturday started early, as usual, at Lista Lighthouse for those taking part in the Lista Bird Race. The teams competed to record as many species as possible between 06:00 and 11:30 within the lighthouse area and around Slevdalsvann. After 11:30, the teams were free to continue the bird race elsewhere on Lista until 15:00. Six teams, with a total of 20 participants, took part in the competition, with Jan Erik Røer, Benjamin Grimsby and Jonas Langbråten acting as judges. By 11:30, the teams had recorded a total of 98 species within the lighthouse area and around Slevdalsvann. Including birds recorded elsewhere on Lista up until 15:00, a total of 111 species were recorded that day. However, this time none of the teams managed to reach 100 species on their own. This year we tried a new approach, and ate at Hønemor. Then we headed down to Tarebua, where this year's lecture took place. Terje Lislevand, who is a professor at the University Museum in Bergen/UiB. His research often focuses on wading birds in the field, with the aim of shedding light on unknown aspects of the birds' reproduction and migratory behavior. He presented exciting results from his research on wading birds and their migration from the breeding grounds to the wintering grounds, and back again. After the lecture, it was time to choose the "Norwegian Birdwatching Champion 2026". Jan Erik Røer thanked everyone for their attendance and effort, and went through the results list from today's Bird Race. Then, the participants from the three teams at the top of the results list went on to the quiz that would determine the winner. Benjamin Grimsby was the quizmaster, and presented a series of pictures of birds that had to be identified within a few seconds, a real test for real field ornithologists. It was even and exciting, and this year it was Øystein Nilsen who took the win and became this year's Norwegian Champion. Second place went to Truls Wexhal Andersen and third place went to young Arne Julius Nilsen! At Lista lighthouse there were various events during the day for both children and adults. Swarowski and Weoptics had a stand and showed off their latest products. The Lister falconry club and Birdlife ung had various activities and you could also try your hand at bird box carpentry, drawing classes, Mini Birdrace. On Sunday morning you could participate in ringing, well assisted by the bird station staff, here we had a good turnout where 30-40 children and adults showed up to get an insight into the bird station's work. At 12:00 there was a guided bird walk in the lighthouse area, where Jonas Langbråten was the tour guide. In addition, Natur og Fritid kept the island open for the occasion, Swarowski and weoptics also had a stand on Sunday.
